The Avant Gardener News Letter
Spring 2001

"Business in Vancouver" Interviews Darlene

In the April 10-16 edition of the Business in Vancouver magazine, Darlene Sanders was happy to be chosen as the subject of their Reader Profile. For your interest, the article has been reproduced below.

Subscriber Profile: Darlene Sanders, President of The Avant Gardener, Vancouver, B.C.

What I do: My job is to ensure the continued success of our two garden/lifestyle retail stores in Kitsilano and West Vancouver. My vision is to create pleasure by bringing the flavor of the garden into people's lives through beautiful quality products and excellent customer service. I oversee operations, manage our Web site and travel extensively to do the buying so that we can keep ahead of trends and stay on the cutting edge of gardening.

My background: My first job, six years part-time in sales at Eaton's while I was a student, created a strong foundation for later retailing. After obtaining a bachelor of education at UBC, I taught primary school, worked in Germany in the hotel business, worked in teacher training as a faculty associate at SFU and then quit education to work at Whitecap Books Publishing as an accounts manager. An avid gardener with a passion for old garden roses, in 1988 in West Vancouver I married skills with interest and opened The Avant Gardener, the first local gardening boutique and a new concept at the time.

Last book read: Tulip Fever, by Deborah Moggach.

Why I subscribe to Business In Vancouver: It helps me to stay connected to the business world, providing me with a larger picture than my own retail niche. I am continually impressed with the quality and breadth of coverage of the local business scene.

2001 VanDusen Flower & Garden Show Information

Our Year 2000 VanDusen
Award Winning Display

A reminder that the VanDusen Flower and Garden Show is coming up. This year it is 4 glorious days: Thursday May 31 to Sunday June 3. Don't miss this enchanting and spectacular event!

Instead of waiting in lineups at the Show, purchase your tickets in advance at The Avant Gardener. Both stores have tickets for sale now: Adults $12, Seniors/Members/Youth $10.

The Avant Gardener has been a Gold Award winner for the past 2 years! View our Aug/Sept 2000 News Letter for more info. This year we are presenting the magic of the Flower Fairies. Our collection of Flower Fairy figurines has been a huge hit this season.

The original Flower Fairy Books were created by an Englishwoman, Cicely Mary Barker, born in the 1890's. Each of her well-loved drawings depicts a different fairy, dressed to mimic the botanically correct flowers in the picture. This year, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the introduction of these books to the world, these exquisitely detailed Flower Fairies have jumped off the pages, so to speak, charmingly reproduced in bronze finished frostproof resin.

We are offering 22 choices of fairies on our web site and in the stores, with additional fairies to be introduced later this year.

Our stores also carry the beautiful Flower Fairy collector plates by Royal Worcester of England as well as several titles of the Flower Fairy books, and in the fall, Flower Fairy calendars. Click on the Garden Decor button for more Flower Fairies information.

I look forward to seeing you at The VanDusen Flower and Garden Show - at our new booth location K1.
